Undergoing scalp micropigmentation (SMP) allows you to address hair loss without surgery. The non-invasive treatment involves depositing pigment dots that resemble your natural hair follicles into the skin. Although SMP was designed for scalp hair loss, the technique is adaptable to thinning hair in the beard, goatee, mustache, and sideburn regions. Here are some of the tools SMP practitioners use:

    SMP Machine

The scalp micropigmentation machine is a rotary tool that uses micro-needles to apply tiny dots of ink that resemble your natural hair follicles. It resembles a tattoo machine but is specifically designed for use on sensitive areas, such as the scalp. SMP machines offer controlled needle depth and vibration to achieve precise tattoos. They also operate at a lower speed to protect delicate scalp skin.

The machines use microneedles that deposit tiny pigments into the skin to create a dot. SMP artists use dots to mimic the size, shape, and appearance of natural hair follicles in the form of a buzz cut. The single-use needles are fine and come in varying sizes to match your follicle size. They often come in triple clusters or micro rounds.

    SMP Pigments

To enhance your hair follicles, SMP practitioners use specialized pigments or inks designed explicitly for scalp tattoos. The ink offers longevity and stability, giving you a semi-permanent solution for various forms of hair loss. You can use SMP to address male and female pattern baldness, surgery and hair transplant scars, or alopecia. If you’re addressing balding crowns, the pigments create the natural appearance of a sharp, buzz cut that blends in with your natural hair.

For thinning hair, the pigments create an illusion of thickness by covering the visible scalp with follicle-looking tattoos. Pigments are carefully selected and formulated to match your natural follicles and skin tone, although you can opt for different colors. They’re often carbon-based and medical-grade, resulting in safe, durable hair tattoos that can withstand exposure to the elements. Pigments are sometimes diluted to achieve the right color and maintain their tone for several years with minimal maintenance.

    Safety Equipment

For a safe and hygienic procedure, SMP practitioners utilize various items, including gloves, hygiene supplies, and sterilization equipment. Sterile gloves and disposable caps help maintain a clean, safe environment, preventing the transfer of germs and other contaminants to the scalp. Surface disinfectants and sterilization equipment, such as medical-grade wipes, help disinfect the SMP machine and working area. SMP practitioners may use UV disinfectants or other tools to maintain the cleanliness of their equipment and offices.

Before the procedure, a professional will shave and clean your scalp, then apply the pigment. This means SMP practitioners typically have shaving equipment and cleaning supplies. They may use topical anesthetics, such as numbing creams and gels, to make the procedure more comfortable. The tattooing is done in a well-lit area with bright, shadow-free lighting for precision. Practitioners also use magnifying glasses to minimize errors, support safe tattooing, and achieve precise application with better results. Other safety supplies include barrier films and cord strip covers that maintain a clean environment and reduce the risk of tripping.

    Procedural Aids

SMP is typically done when you’re seated or reclined, so practitioners offer comfortable, adjustable chairs. The movable chairs allow the practitioner to position the head correctly for optimal access and precise tattooing. SMP practitioners also use calipers, rulers, tape measures, and scalp markers. These measuring and mapping tools enable them to plan their tattooing sessions effectively, allowing for proper pigment positioning and spacing. Scalp tattooists can follow your natural hair follicles or create marks in new areas to create density and cover visible skin.

Skin markers outline the treatment area, guiding the practitioner to achieve high-quality outcomes. SMP artists also have mirrors to help you see progress and view the results after the procedure. After the session, the practitioner may apply an antibacterial ointment or moisturizer to promote quick recovery and prevent dryness. They may also recommend sunscreens and specialized aftercare shampoos.

SMP treatment offers an effective, non-invasive alternative to hair transplants and robust hats used to address hair loss. To achieve the best outcomes, select experienced practitioners and artists who use high-quality pigments and have fully equipped facilities.
